Possible Speech Red Flags
1-2 years old: doesn’t say P, B, M, H, W
2-3 years old: doesn’t say K, G, D, T, N, F; difficulty understanding majority of what child says
3-4 years old: doesn’t say S, V, Z, L
4-5 years old: doesn’t say CH, SH
Language Red Flags
0-3 months: not engaging with others or smiling
4-7 months: not making early speech sounds (babbling)
7-12 months: not waving, pointing, or making sounds
12-18 months: only says a couple of words consistently
18 months-2 years old: using one word to communicate, does not combine two words
2 years old: has less than 50 words in vocabulary
2-3 years old: difficulty with interacting with other kids
2.5-3 years old: difficulty with early reading and writing; avoids books
Stuttering Red Flags
Children may stutter when they are younger and developing their vocabulary, this is typical and will disappear with time. If it continues longer than 6 months and you notice your child having a lot of difficulty saying words, repeating the first sound of words (b-bb-b-b-at), frequently stopping while they are talking, or holding onto a sound (ffffffffish) then this may be an indictor of stuttering issues.
Hearing Red Flags
0-1 year old: not noticing sounds around them
7 months-1 year old: not responding to their name
1-2 years old: not following basic directions
0-3 years old: delays in speech and language
Voice Red Flags
breathy, scratchy or gravelly voice
nasal voice (sounds stuffed up or higher pitched)
These traits are persistent and not related to possible sicknesses or allergies a child may have.
